Do it yourself, change the fog lights on your Subaru Outback, the model produced between the years 2000 and 2004. This replacement requires a 10 mm socket wrench and a flat blade screwdriver. You might consider using a jack stand to make the process easier. With all the tools needed, you should complete the task in less than half an hour.
First of all, after you gain access underneath the front bumper, you can start by prying out and removing the small clip seen in the image below. It holds a plastic cover that must be pulled away, in order to access the back of the fog light assembly.
After you do it, you will be able to disconnect the harness that powers up the light bulb (see next picture) or remove the bulb completely, by turning its socket counterclockwise. The fog light has a retainer here on the back, that must be also removed, a plastic nut that can be accessed by hand.
The final step of the removal process takes place on the exterior of the front bumper. Above the fog light, there are two 10 mm bolts that secure the assembly at the top (as you can see below). Remove them and pull out the assembly.
At this point you can install the replacement, reversing the steps above. Insert the new fog light into the bumper, tighten the bolts on the top, secure it behind, with the plastic nut, plug back the light bulb’s harness and reinstall the plastic cover. These are the steps you need to follow, if you wish to remove and replace the fog light assembly on your Subaru Outback, the model manufactured between 2000 and 2004.
