Do it yourself, change the tailgate support cables on your Toyota Tacoma, produced between the years 2005 and 2012. To do it, you will need a T40 torx bit with a wrench and something to support the tailgate when you remove the cables, maybe a second person. You can replace both the cables very easily, in less than 15 minutes.
In time, the cables supporting the tail gate might get rusty and wear out. To remove them, go to the tail gate and open it. Don’t let it fall all the way down, to allow the cable to stay a little bent. Lift the cable at the top side (the side opposite to the one secured with the torx bolt) and remove it from the metal hook on the body of the car.
Once you do it, the tailgate will only be supported by one cable. Make sure that other cable can hold it, or get help from a second person. In order to remove the cable completely, use a T40 torx bit driver and remove the bolt at the bottom, as you can see in the picture below.
Use the bolt and the washer from the old cable when you install the new one. Tighten the bolt at the bottom first, lift the tailgate a little, until you can secure the cable into the hook and that should be it. This is all you need to do if you wish to remove and replace the tailgate support cables on your Toyota Tacoma, the model made between the years 2005 and 2012.
