DIY, change the master window switch on your Chevy Malibu, the model produced in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. This is a very simple repair that will require a flat blade screwdriver and about 10 minutes of your time.
First of all, you have to open the front door, on the driver’s side and start by prying out the window switch. You can use the tip of a flat headed screwdriver, inserted as you can see in the picture below. You can use a rag wrapped around the tip, if you want to be extra careful with the plastics on the door.
After you pull up the switch, you will notice three harnesses, that you must disconnect (see image below). Use the screwdriver to help you and release the switch. In some cases, the metal clips that hold it inside the door panel can fall off. This problem can be solved using a magnet, or a similar tool. If not, the other solutions are removing the entire door panel or replacing the clips with new ones.
Now, if you need to separate the plastic bezel of the switch, you can use the screwdriver again and work on the tabs surrounding it, as you can see below. After you make the repairs and replacements needed, reinstall the window switch into the door panel. These are the steps you have to follow, if you plan to replace by yourself the master window switch on a Chevy Malibu, manufactured between the years 1997 and 2003.
