DIY, change the tail light assembly on your Dodge Durango, the model manufactured between the years 2004 and 2009. The replacement is very simple and can be done in less than 20 minutes. You will require a flat blade screwdriver and a T25 torx driver.
You will start, obviously, after you open the tailgate of the car. With the tip of a flat blade screwdriver, you will have to pry out the two plastic pins that hold the tail light, located to the interior of the car, as you can see below. Remove the middle of the pins first and then pull them out with your fingers. Once you do it, you can grab on the assembly and pull it out firmly.
The tail light has two guiding pins on the side to the exterior of the car. They can be tricky sometimes and you might find it difficult to detach the lens from the body of the car, because of them. Just pull the assembly firmly and once you detach it, disconnect the electrical harness behind, to be able to install the replacement. That harness has a red safety tab, as you can see in the picture below, that can be moved away with the screwdriver.
At this point you can install the replacement, if it comes equipped with the contact plate containing the four light bulbs. But, because in most of the cases it comes not, you will have to move it from the old tail light to the new one. You can do it very simply using a T25 torx driver on the three screws that secure the contact plate, seen in the image below.
Now it’s also the perfect time to service the bulbs, if that’s needed. Just pull them out of their sockets and replace them. If not, install the plate with the bulbs onto the new assembly, plug back the electrical harness, insert the tail light into the body of the car, aligning it correctly with the guiding pins and in the end, secure it with the two pins. This is all you need to, if you wish to remove and replace the tail light assembly on your Dodge Durango, the car model made between the years 2004 and 2009.
