DIY, change the parking brake handle and cable on your GMC Sierra, the model manufactured in 2002. This procedure is the same on models made from 1999 to 2007. The only tool you’ll need is a 10 mm socket with a ratchet, or a wrench. This repair can be done in less than 20 minutes.
So, the parking brake handle is located on the driver’s side, above the pedals and it is held by a 10 mm bolt (see image below). You will have to remove it, using an appropriate wrench or socket.
After that, you can follow the cable and remove it from its securing elements. There are two metal holders, brackets from which you will have to detach it, as you can see in the picture below). Work at the end of the cable first and remove it by hand and then on the rubber piece above. Here you might need a flat blade screwdriver.
After this, you should be able to pull out the handle and the cable and work to install the replacement part. You should first connect the cable at the end and then on the second bracket, where that rubber sleeve begins. Then secure the handle with the bolt and that’s it. This is all you have to do, if you plan to change the parking brake handle and cable on your GMC Sierra, the model produced in 2002.
