DIY, change the hood latch assembly on your Toyota Camry, produced between the years 1997 and 2001. You will require a 10 mm socket wrench with a thin extension, a new hood latch from your auto parts shop and a marker pen. The repair process is quite simple and you can do it in less than 20 minutes.
In the beginning, open the hood of your car and secure it with the prop. Before starting the repair, we recommend you to mark the position of the latch’s edges with a thin marker pen. Then, using a 10 mm socket wrench, remove the bolts marked in the image below. In order to remove the bottom one, you will need a thin and long extension to your socket, because you have to access it from the grille. Otherwise, you will need to remove the front grille of your car.
After you do it, pull out the assembly and look behind it. Lift up the small plastic cover and release the end of cable that triggers the latch, as you can see below.
At this point, you can install the new assembly. Reinstall the cable first, then position the new latch on the markers of the old one and secure it with the bolts. Be careful, do not tighten them fully. First try to check if the hood closes and everything work okay. With the hood closed, you know the latch assembly is aligned correctly and you can finish tightening the three bolts. Check the mechanism again and you are ready to go. This is all you have to do, if you wish to change the hood latch assembly on your Toyota Camry, made between the years 1997 and 2001.
