DIY, change the broken door handle on your Toyota 4Runner, the model made in the years 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. This is a simple repair that can be done in less than 5 minutes, using a small flat blade screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver.
The replacement starts after you open the door with the broken handle. For this car, the door handle is secured by a Phillips screwdriver, located as seen in the image below.
After you remove the screw you will have to slide the handle a little, towards the interior of the car and it will reveal the metal rod behind it. This rod is secured by a small plastic clip, like the one seen in the picture below. You will have to get to it somehow with your finger, or with a flat blade screwdriver, if you find it easier and pull it off. Then you will be able to lift the handle and remove it completely from the door panel.
At this point you can install the replacement. Reinstalling that rod may be difficult in some cases. Use the flat blade screwdriver to hold on the rod while you insert the door handle, then push the clip on and in the end, slide the handle back and secure it with the screw. This is all you need to do, if you wish to remove and replace the door handle on your Toyota 4Runner, the model produced between the years 1996 and 2002.
