Do it yourself, change the air filter on your Ford F-150, the model with the 5.4L engine, manufactured in the year 1999. The procedure should be similar on models made between the years 1997 and 2003. You won’t require tools or special mechanical knowledge. It is a very simple repair if you follow the next steps, that won’t take you more than 5 minutes.
In the first step of the repair, you should open the hood of your car and locate the air box. On most models it is situated behind the head light, on the passenger’s side. You have to remove the metal collar shown in the image below, in order to get access to the air filter.
You won’t need tools to remove it. You can just use your bare hands for the metal collar. If it is really stuck or rusty, you could use a flat blade screwdriver or a pair of pliers.
At this point you can replace the old air filter and install the replacement. Always compare the new filter with the old one and make sure they look identical. Clean the air box if you find there dirt or any kind of debris. After you install the new filter, finish the repair by sealing back the air box with the collar. This is all you need to know, if you plan to service by yourself the air filter on your Ford F-150 manufactured in the year 1999.
